James Cook was originally a musician and songwriter for the band Flamingoes. His first book, Memory Songs - an exploration of the music that shaped the 90s - was published by Unbound in May 2018. His second, In Her Room: How Music Helped Me Connect with My Autistic Daughter was published by Bonnier Books UK in April 2020.
He is currently an editor at Review 31 magazine, and a reader for The Literary Consultancy. His short fiction and essays have appeared in the anthologies Vagabond Holes (Fremantle Press) and Garden Among Fires (Dodo Ink). A regular contributor to the Times Literary Supplement, his journalism and essays have also appeared in the Guardian, the Saturday Telegraph, Art Review, Boundless magazine, Litro, 3:AM magazine, Minor Lits, and Review 31, among others.

In 2017, with his twin brother, novelist Jude Cook, James was a guest on the award-winning literary podcast Backlisted. In 2024, he returned to talk about Michael Powell's 'A Life in Movies'.
